Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Met)

Auditorium - Subs - Sunday 8 Sep 2019, 14:30

Met Encore

In our second of four Metropolitan Opera encores, we present Rossini’s madcap comedy, which receives a spirited production by Tony Award–winning director Bartlett Sher.

The society Rossini depicts is a place where aloof aristocrats, fawning professionals and even servants are so wary of one another that a cottage industry has arisen for go-betweens who will spy, scheme and transmit secret notes. Sher (in his Met debut) has embraced this 203-year-old opera’s atmosphere of intrigue and subterfuge. Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato is Rosina, Juan Diego Flórez, the undisputed king of Rossini tenors, is Almaviva, and Swedish baritone Peter Mattei exudes charisma and confidence and shows a flair for comic timing in the title role. Maurizio Benini conducts. Sung in Italian with English subtitles. Recorded in 2007. 185m inc interval.

Tickets £17.50 (Friends/Students £15)
