Eighth Grade

Auditorium - Tuesday 18 Jun 2019, 13:30

This sweet, sad and beautifully observed film has been lauded by film critics all around the world. A masterpiece that must be seen!

Thirteen-year-old Kayla (Elsie Fisher) endures the tidal wave of contemporary suburban adolescence as she makes her way through the last week of middle school - the end of her thus far disastrous eighth grade year before she begins high school. The film beautifully hovers between those high school films about cliques and fitting in, such as ‘Clueless’, and those that are a bit darker such as Gus van Sant’s ‘Elephant’. Elsie Fisher is absolutely outstanding in the role of Kayla Day, like an undiscovered Fanning sister: her smart, observant performance gives the audience instant access to her vulnerabilities, hurt feelings and quiet determination. Bo Burnham (director) is a name to be remembered!
