This story of three individuals and a mysterious incident they experience, is an absorbing portrait of love, obsession and jealousy - a fascinating film.
Wannabe writer Jong-su (Ah-In Yoo) bumps into an old friend Hae-mi (Jong-seo Jeon), who asks him to take care of her cat while she leaves on a trip to Africa. When she returns, Hae-mi introduces Jong-su to the mysterious nouveau riche Ben (Steven Yeun), who soon reveals some secret interests. As Jong-su is drawn into a new world, there are traces of Scorsese’s ‘Taxi Driver’ and Hitchcock’s ‘Vertigo’ as he loses grip of reality. With a riveting performance by Yoo, which goes from smouldering to raging with subtle mastery, director Chang-dong Lee serves up a psychological thriller that is deliciously dark and packs a wallop in the final chapter. Winner of the Film Critics’ award at Cannes, nominated for the Palme D’Or, and one of the highlights of this season. (Subtitles)
