Taxi Driver

Main Auditorium 2000 - Saturday 4 Mar 2017, 20:45

A mentally unstable Vietnam War veteran works as a night-time taxi driver in New York City where the perceived decadence and sleaze feeds his dark urges.

Insomniac ex-Marine Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) works the nightshift, driving his cab throughout decaying mid-'70s New York City, wishing for a "real rain" to wash the "scum" off the neon-lit streets. Chronically alone, Travis cannot connect with anyone, and becomes infatuated with a self-assured presidential campaign worker (Cybill Shepherd), who agrees to a date and then spurns Travis when he cluelessly takes her to a tasteless film. After being spurned once more by a teenage prostitute (Jodie Foster) in no need of his rescue operation, he dons battle uniform, shaves his head into a mohawk and takes to the streets bent on vengeance. Harvey Keitel also co-stars - but it is De Niro who is hypnotically watchable.
